From Mrs Tiresias

LO: To explore the way Duffy uses language for effect.
To evaluate Duffy’s intentions.

Background and context:
•Greek myth.
•Tiresius is a prophet, a priest of Zeus.
•In most versions, he sees two snakes copulating, and kills the female.
•He is punished by Hera
•Undergoes a sex change

**** Interesting fact.... Duffy had to add the 'from' later, after she was criticised for not using the story accurately...****

Read the poem and  then identify key language features in the poem, and their effect.
• How are men presented?
• How does the narrative progress?

Duffy’s attitude:
–Is this poem ‘male-bashing’?  Come to an opinion, and be ready to say yes or no.

Homework: Look up the following words, record what they mean and then apply them to Duffy's poetry. PQC if you can... !
* Apotheosis
* Piety
* Hedonism
